Let that kid out!!
Huh? What kid?
That little kid in each of us who grew up making funny faces, weird noises, moving around unselfconsciously, and on and on. An exhilarating freedom of personal expression, filled with magic and wonder. Can you remember how that felt?
Um…maybe you’ve forgotten about him, her, or them??
Ominous drum roll….You begin to grow up and are told “PUT AWAY CHILDISH THINGS!” Adults don’t do things like that! (Eeek!) That child, that beloved little unique you, goes into the closet (never to emerge again??)
Balderdash.
Double balderdash!
I digress. Found myself struggling with some difficult issues and felt like I was sinking into an emotional morass. Don’t know where the thought came from, but suddenly saw an image of myself making all sorts of faces, just as I did when I was a child. Hmmm. Decided to try it. No need to describe all the elastic contortions I experienced making faces, but it was great! I stopped and this big ol’ smile was plastered on my face. And it stayed. I was no longer sinking.
Wunderbar.
Since then I’ve been playing with making faces and find it’s a happy pill. A throwback to my younger years. Also making up words and saying them in funny voices while engaged in face-making. Completely free of social ramifications. (What a relief. It’s no wonder I feel better.) Light comes streaming back into my life while doing all these “childish” things…
Let that kid out of the closet and have a ball!
“When I became an adult, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness….” ~ C.S. Lewis
So there! 🙃
Thanks, Jan! Such a great reminder! Makes me realize my pets are so unselfconscious. My cat yawns great huge open yawns. That feels good.
