Hey, bring on the light!
What light?
You know, the stuff that flies out of your magic wand.
Do I have a magic wand??
I think so because you’ve talked about it in other stories. You don’t remember?
Oh, that magic wand. My putative pixie dust magic wand, courtesy of Tinker Bell and Peter Pan. Love that one! Thanks so much for the reminder. But, wait, why do you mention it?
Because of the light it brings to others.
Well, gee, we're back to “light” again and I don’t know what you mean by “light”…
Shedding light on people so they feel seen and cared about. I can live with that as today’s goal. I can live with that as tomorrow’s goal. I can live with….well you get the idea.
What’s this thing about shining light on others??
Excuse me, wondering what universe you’ve been living in, Jan? Read the news? Seen the chasms that separate so many good people? School shootings, climate disasters, your gas tank…. This is a hurtin’ world. Lots of darkness.
Well, yes, there is that. I probably avoid thinking about it because I feel powerless. (I hate feeling powerless.) I don’t mean to be a smart ass (well, maybe I do😉) but “Whatcha gonna do? Call Ghostbusters?”
No-I-Am-Not. And enough of that!
(Sorry.)
Standing on my high horse, now. (I love to declaim!)
So, we have darkness in our world? What about creating veins of light? Simple, little teeny-tiny actions that allow others to feel seen, acknowledged and nurtured. Little bitty stuff (but oh-so powerful):
Just being really, really nice to the cashier at the pharmacy (grocery store, wherever);
Leaning out your car window to say hello to a neighbor passing by;
Thanking someone for returning a shopping cart left behind by another customer on the street;
Waving to the hard-working postal carrier
Takes microseconds to be KIND… Just microseconds…
And even better (ta-dah!), you become your magic wand, spreading light. How’s that for magic?
Seems like pretty small potatoes, if you ask me.
Small potatoes?! Consider this:
Filling up and spilling over,
It's an endless waterfall,
Filling up and spilling over,
Over all.
Spilling over all. Every act of kindness/light is a drop of water, slowly turning into a stream, a river, and a waterfall. Damn right, “spilling over all.” Let’s go do it!
Got the message, my dear Jan, you who feel powerless??
Loud and clear. (Thank you.)
❤️If you’re enjoying “This Being Human Thing,” I’d be grateful if you’d share with others (including, perhaps, the reason you appreciate reading these stories.) 🙏🏽🙏🏾🙏🏻
Creating veins of light? Wonderful idea . . . , like, I remember way back in 2016, right after 45 was elected, Jan began creating (and giving away) wearable blue pins that read "Make America kind again." THAT struck me as a wonderfully-positive way to fight back against the darkening political and cultural skies. And there are SO many ways to share veins of light everyday, with so many people. Thanks for the reminder, Jan. I'll continue sharing, as best I can.
