DISCLAIMER: NOT A POET, but an itinerant activist for lifting up humanity🥳
Twas the week before Easter and all through the ‘hood, people were worried, frazzled, and misunderstood. War in the Ukraine, spiraling prices. Easter egg hunting - just not happening in the Carolinas.
Two old(er) biddies perceived this bad rap, heeding the call for some much needed madcap.
Searching for light in all this mess, an incredible plan was laid, with (wow!) - finesse.
Chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate bunnies and eggs - Amazon contacted, ingredients pegged. Gift bags, easter stickers, this highly secret gig, suddenly had legs!
THEN….
THE ASSEMBLY BEGAN. Despite arthritic old(er) fingers, bag after bag was filled, tied, stickered, all according to plan.
OH, NO! We ran out!
Amazon was booted (too damn expensive), but nearby Walmart and Dollar General were cheaper and undisputed. Trip after trip, assembly after assembly, neighborhood mapped, house by house, the plan finally rooted!
Oh my, oh my, oh my, when to go egging so as not to be caught? Nesting chocolate in mailboxes, unseen, that was the plot. Keen observation (and dumb luck) really hit the spot. Neighbors off to work by 9 AM - we suddenly had our slot.
Whoa! 130 Easter mailbox nests to be filled! The skulking began. Looking right and left, it was going according to plan.
Until…..
Some neighbors had the nerve to come walking by! One old(er) biddy crouched behind hedges with a shopping bag full of goodies, really, really hoping nothing would go awry. It didn’t, whereby… she still forgot to put chocolate eggs in the home’s mailbox and only remembered later, with a deep sigh.
Oh, but wait, the neighborhood listserv went on a run. Joy, delight, surprise, one by one by one…
Feeling powerless in the world, BUT playful in the ‘hood, was an incredible high. Chocolate and caring made hearts fly.
And those anonymous ol’ biddies winked at each other, trusting other magical events would likely be nigh. (Hey, you, too, are invited to try…)
Reading it again, I think this has become my favorite! I love the energy, crazy rhyme, sense of secret activity, and joy.
Thanks, Jane. High praise indeed! Writing this, I discovered there are whole websites that provide many, many words that rhyme with the one you’re looking for. For those of us who are rhyme-challenged, what a gift.
